The Cowboys were going to cut Pat McQuistan. The Dolphins were looking for depth in their offensive line. So both teams benefited with the trade of McQuistan to Miami for a late-round draft pick in 2011.
"That’s always nice," Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said when asked about getting value in return for players who were going to be cut. "It just speaks to the fact that we’ve got some good football players on the team."
McQuistan never started a game in four seasons with the Cowboys. Most of his 40 appearances were on special teams. He was scheduled to make $1.176 million this season, and backups Robert Brewster and Sam Young are younger, make less money and have brighter futures.
But backup linemen like McQuistan are somewhat in demand, because he can play both tackle spots and can fill in at guard. He started at right guard in Thursday's game against the Dolphins.
Bill Parcells and Jeff Irleand, who now are in charge in Miami, were in Dallas in 2006 when the Cowboys used a seventh-round pick on McQuistan. McQuistan's line coach was Tony Sparano, now the Dolphins head coach.
The Dolphins placed Nate Garner on injured reserve earlier this week with a left foot injury. Garner played four positions last year. Left tackle Jake Long, who injured his knee Thursday night, and right tackle Vernon Carey (calf) are banged up.
