There were many huge plays on Sunday that could have turned the game for either team and one of those was a mistake by Cowboys’ rookie special teamer Jesse Holley.
Early in the fourth quarter with the Cowboys ahead 27-21, Holley missed an assignment on a punt by Mat McBriar, and Taj Smith of Indianapolis rushed in almost untouched to block the punt. Smith recovered if for a TD and the Colts took a 28-27 lead.
“Mental error,” Holley said. “Nothing I haven’t seen before. Nothing I can’t handle. Nothing I haven’t handled all year long. I just thank my teammates for continuing to have my back. Not getting down by continuing to fight, continuing to support me.”
That was only the second block of McBriar’s seven-year career. The other was in 2003 against Arizona and that one resulted in a broken foot for McBriar. That blocked punt was also recovered for a TD.
