Garrett hopeful Aug. 4 practice date for free agents changes

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett hopes the Aug. 4 practice date for signed free agents might be moved up.

At least that’s what he’s heard.

“Jason Witten is our player rep and what he has told me is that the players association is working very hard to get the recertification to happen. And soon after the recertification happens all across the league, they’re going to vote to ratify the agreement and once that ratification happens there’s a possibility that these guys who are free agents are able to practice,” Garrett said.

He paused and gave a slight grin.

“Now, that’s what I got from our player rep, Jason Witten,” Garrett said. “He’s a very a dependable and reliable guy, and to be honest with you, it’s a really important thing. I don’t want to pick out a particular example, but Matt Hasselbeck just signed with the Tennessee Titans. He signs a contract and for six days, (you have to say), ‘Ok Matt. You potentially could be playing quarterback for us, but you have to stand over here until next week.’ It’s not real good.
