Tight end Martellus Bennett knew what he was watching as Stephen McGee led a game-winning drive for the Dallas Cowboys in the preseason opener Thursday night.
“He’s a guy who understands the fight,” Bennett said of the quarterback, who he played with at Texas A&M. “He’s been a leader since we played at A&M. He’s a guy who at the end of the game, you put the ball in his hands, he’s not going to make the mistake. He’s going to give us a chance to win the game every time.”
Bennett didn’t play because of a tender hamstring. But he liked the work of the tight end group – backups John Phillips and Martin Rucker combined for six catches – and McGee.
“I love to see McGee do well,” Bennett said. “McGee’s a guy who works, works, works, works, works, works, and he works at being good at what he does. He made a lot of big plays tonight. The fourth and long pass to Rucker, the 2-point conversion. He even scrambled today, too. That was the old McGee right there.”
