Kicker David Buehler felt like he was starting to hit his stride after a "slow" start. But he injured his hip kicking off in Monday's practice and sat out Tuesday. He hopes to return to practice Thursday when the Cowboys go against the Chargers.
"I kind of tweaked it," Buehler said. "I kicked two [kickoffs] after that, and it probably wasn’t a good idea, but I was warm. I wanted to fight through it. I didn’t think it was that serious. I tried to warmup at the end of practice yesterday and go out and kick in team, but my hip just wasn’t feeling it. I'm just getting treatment and doing all the right things, hydrating. I’ll come in on our day off tomorrow and get more treatment. Hopefully, I’ll be ready to go by Thursday, but we’ll see. I really won’t know until I actually get out and start hitting some."
Rookie Dan Bailey went 4-for-4 on Tuesday, hitting from 24, 31, 34 and 36. He later missed a 54-yarder in a two-minute drill, hitting the right upright.
Buehler is competing with Bailey to keep his job. Buehler said he got back to "bad habits" in the off-season without kicking coach Chris Boinol.
"You get back to those old habits that don’t help you," Buehler said. "Obviously, Chris saw those once I got in training camp. It took a while to break out the mold and knock off the rust. But I’m slowly but surely doing that."
