Jason Hatcher spent most of Tuesday morning hearing elevator jokes. They sure sounded funnier than they did Monday night, when the veteran Cowboys defensive end was stuck in an elevator at the team’s Arlington hotel.
“It was serious at the time, but it’s something to laugh about now,” Hatcher said, telling reporters the whole story.
So what happened exactly?
“It stopped between 12 and 11,” he said. “It dropped down like six inches, and it didn’t move again. I was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’ So I pushed my floor again. It didn’t move. I was like, ‘Oh my God. I’m stuck.’
“I almost panicked, so I ripped the door open, and there was a little crack in the other door. So I was like, ‘Help!’ ”
Luckily, a couple of team officials heard Hatcher, and they called the fire department. After about 15 minutes, Hatcher was out. But in between, he tweeted and texted and got through a claustrophobic episode.
“I was sending texts out to all of them,” Hatcher said, laughing about his teammates’ responses. “Marcus Spears responded to me, ‘No way, you’re lying.’ I said, ‘No, I’m not lying – I’m stuck in an elevator right now.’ He was sending me back ‘LMAO.’ You know what that means!”
Hatcher says, yes, he’ll go back in an elevator. Just not that elevator.
“No way,” he said, still amused. “I’ll remember that elevator.”
And just in case nobody believed him, Hatcher tweeted a picture of himself with the firefighters who got him out. You can see it on his Twitter account @hatcher97.
