Jerry Jones gives his blessing to a place for rookie runner Tanner

Jerry Jones all but put rookie running back Phillip Tanner on the team Thursday night.

Said so right there on television.

“They asked me the wrong question: ‘How in the world could you cut a guy like him after what he’s doing?’ ” Jones said of his appearance on the broadcast of the Cowboys’ preseason game at Miami. “And I obviously said, ‘You don’t.’ ”

Tanner rushed for 28 yards on five carries, giving him 128 on 23 carries in the four preseason games. The Cowboys won’t set their roster until Saturday, but he looks like the front-runner for what could be the final running back spot behind Felix Jones and DeMarco Murray.

Jones didn’t shy away from his bold statement.

“The owner had been hearing from a lot of our staff, a lot of our scouts,” he said. “So the owner didn’t just step up there tonight on television and say that. It’s from a lot of input.”
