Punter Mat McBriar hurt his left foot more than a week ago. He kicked on it last Sunday. He kicked on it in practice Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and even Saturday.
The Cowboys signed Chris Jones to their practice squad as insurance, but they thought McBriar was good to go. Instead, McBriar lasted only three punts after aggravating his left foot and ankle. He was replaced by kicker Dan Bailey in the second half.
McBriar will see a specialist this week for a nerve condition.
"It just didn’t feel right today," McBriar said. "That was a big surprise, because I kicked [Saturday], and I kicked Friday, and it didn’t seem to be an issue."
Bailey punted for Oklahoma State in one game last season. That was the last time he had punted. He had two punts for a 39.5 average and a 37.0 net. His long punt was 41 yards.
"It’s just one of those things when we had a little something come up and you have to go out there and make the best of a bad situation," Bailey said. "I felt like I did OK. It wasn’t terrible; it wasn’t good. But I think we were in the 30s in net, so that’s pretty much the best I can do just winging it."
McBriar said he doesn't know how long he will be out.
"I don’t know. I mean, it seems to have settled down now," McBriar said.
