Shaun Chapas will likely handle special teams work as much or more than fullback when the Cowboys play Arizona. The Cowboys need to fill in for Phillip Tanner on special teams. Tanner hurt his hamstring against Miami and has missed Monday’s and Wednesday’s practices. (Players were off Tuesday.)
Chapas, a seventh-round pick out of Georgia in April, was signed from the practice squad Wednesday. He has not played a game yet.
“He’s done a nice job with scout team work throughout the season,” coach Jason Garrett said. “He’s grown as a player. Certainly, he’ll have the responsibility of learning the fullback stuff, and he’ll be a contributor on special teams, as well.”
The Cowboys released Akwasi Owusu-Ansah to make room for Chapas.
Dallas has been without a true fullback the past two games. Tony Fiammetta will miss at least one more game with an unknown illness. He said Wednesday he hopes to return against the Giants next week.
