Cowboys could help their offensive line in free agency if big names hit the market

The Cowboys will be looking to improve in the interior of their offensive line. Offensive line coach Bill Callahan will help, but Dallas could use better players.

Center Phil Costa was the 30th-best center in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus. Right guard Kyle Kosier, 33, didn't have his best season. He tied for 46th among guards, according to the Web site. The Cowboys started three left guards. Montrae Holland played there for 10 games after being re-signed when rookie Bill Nagy was lost for the season. Pro Football Focus had Holland tied for 16th among guards.

Stanford offensive guard David DeCastro could be available at No. 14 in the draft, but signing a free agent is a possibility, too.

The best guards slated to become free agents are New Orleans' Carl Nicks and Baltimore's Ben Grubbs. Houston's Chris Myers, Green Bay's Scott Wells and San Diego's Nick Hardwick are the top centers whose contracts expire.

Nicks was named to the All-Pro team, and Pro Football Focus said he had the second-best season behind Philadelphia's Evan Mathis by allowing two sacks, two quarterback hits and eight pressures. The Saints are expected to do all they can to keep Nicks.

But he is expected to command more than his teammate, Jahri Evans, who signed the richest contract ever for a guard last offseason. Evans signed a seven-year, $56.7 million contract, with $19 million in the first year and $25.7 million over the first three years. The Saints could franchise Nicks, who turns 27 in May. However, that would entail getting quarterback Drew Brees under contract first. They also have receiver Marques Colston set to become a free agent.

Grubbs was 12th among guards, according to PFF. He allowed four sacks, two quarterback hits and six pressures. Baltimore was 10th in rushing. Grubbs turns 28 in March.

Myers had the best season of any center, according to PFF. He played 1,060 snaps and gave up one sack. He also was a big reason the Texans ranked second in rushing. He turns 31 in September.

Wells was the fourth-best center, and Hardwick was 12th. Both would be upgrades over Costa. Wells just turned 31. Hardwick turns 31 in September.

Whatever it takes - It Just Makes TOOO MUCH Sense

LT - Tyron Smith

LG - DeCastro #1 Draft Pick

C – Chris Meyer (F/A Texans)

RG - Carl Nicks (F/A Saints)

RT - Doug Free

SB here we come ....

Message to Ms Williams, did you see that the Cowboys drafted two other lineman last other other than Smith???? Or are you one of those fools who think that if you're not form the first round you suck?? Good job Ms Williams...another real thought out blog. (rolls eyes, shakes head..)

A sure thing off lineman in the first round makes sense if the player avail is higher on the Cowboys board than the avail LBs and CBs... Key is a sure thing pick. That's why T Smith is looking like a good choice!

The off line is critical to Dallas success. If we can run the ball, control the clock, and pass block, then we can put games away, and keep the defense off of the field. Look at the o line of the 90s Cowboys... Do they win SBs w/o that consistency? I say no.

Remind me again why we got rid of Andre Gurode. He was listed as a top-10 center by the same Pro Football Focus.

You say money? Really? Now we are looking at potentially signing some free agents for big $ to try to fix the O-line.

@Turk: If the offensive line was changed to the set you show we would need to leave Free at LT and Smith at RT. We would need the veteran Free on the Left side to help out DeCastro (rookie). Smith will only be a 2nd year man and while he played very well for a rookie this past year he still will need another year to develop before switching him to LT. Letting him play another year beside a veteran player of the caliber of a Nicks would certainly be beneficial. Switching to a 4-3 at this stage would mean drafting at least 2 more defensive ends or picking them up in free agency. And we would still have to upgrade the corner back position regardless. Newman will be gone next year and I look for Jenkins to be gone as well.

A Clean Pocket is what gives Rodgers, Brees & Brady the time to survey the field

The Interior O-Line Upgrade Will Do A Lot For Romo
1.) Open Vertical Passing Game
2.) Open up entire playbook on any down and distance
3.) Improve Redzone & Goal Line Rushing
4.) Give the Offense Balance (pass/run)
5.) Win the NFC East against the NY Giants & Eagles pass rush
6.) Keep the defense off the field
7.) Put Up 40 Points to win NFC
8.) PWR Rushing for the SB
9.) TD's instead of FG or Punts

We have to Protect Romo from the NY Giants & Eagles Pass Rush to win NFC East

We have to be able to Run the ball to win a SB

Rebuilding INTERIOR O-LINE opens up the entire play-book on any down and distance - anywhere on the field

Besides we cannot fix all of the Defensive problems in one year - Better to have a good offense to keep the DEFENSE off of the FIELD and keep Romo healthy

Full Offseason for Rob Ryan and Mike Woiczik will do WONDERS for all of the defense especially Bruce Carter and Sean Lee

We could just switch to a 4-3 Defense for a year to mask the secondary with a 4 man "Bona Fide' pass rush

Sign a good free agent at center, Draft DeCastro and hope Nagy or Arkin can step up. Get on Free's butt and get him bck to playing like a year ago. Draft defense with the rest of the picks.
