Cowboys replace Hudson Houck with former Raiders coach Bill Callahan and will add DBs coach

The Cowboys have hired former Oakland Raiders head coach Bill Callahan to replace the retiring Hudson Houck as offensive line coach, according to a source.

Callahan’s hiring was reported by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

They requested permission to talk to Cleveland Browns defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson and are expected to add the former NFL defensive back to their staff this week. Henderson will replace Dave Campo.

Callahan, 55, spent the past four seasons as the assistant head coach and offensive line coach for the New York Jets. Three of his offensive linemen – Alan Faneca, Nick Mangold and D’Brickashaw Ferguson – combined for nine Pro Bowl appearances.

Callahan was 15-17 as head coach of the Raiders in 2000-02, including a Super Bowl appearance, and 27-22 from 2004-07 as head coach of the University of Nebraska.

He was the offensive coordinator of the Raiders from 1998-2001 before replacing Jon Gruden as head coach.

Houck, 69, also served as the running game coordinator. He was the league’s highest-paid offensive line coach at $1 million per season.

Houck returned to the Cowboys in 2008. He first coached in Dallas from 1993-2001 before going to San Diego and then Miami. He spent 29 seasons coaching in the NFL.

The Cowboys have five other assistants with contracts set to expire. The Star-Telegram reported Monday that Campo will not return to the team.

Running backs coach Skip Peete, assistant offensive line coach Wes Phillips, secondary coach Brett Maxie and assistant receivers coach Keith O’Quinn also have expiring contracts.

The Titans have asked for permission to interview Maxie, whom the Cowboys would like to have back to pair with Henderson.

Henderson coached under Rob Ryan for two seasons in Cleveland. He was the Jets defensive backs coach in 2008.

Bill Callahan is an excellent offensive line coach. This is supported by the fact that 3 of his linemen with the Jets combined for 9 Pro Bowl appearances. He certainly didn't have the best fortunes as a head coach but that doesn't detract from his abilities as a position coach.

Good! A coach I detest joins a team I detest. That provides great economy of effort in my booing.

It was Jerry that shuffled the O-line this off season. It was Jerry that inked deals with the WORST defensive backfield in the league. Boycott all Cowboys sponsors starting with PaPa Johns pizza.... Jerry owns several franchises INCLUDING the one at Cowboy Stadium. Verizon, Miller/Coors, Campbell's soup, Ford, etc. Refuse to buy any Cowboy merchandise or tickets or stadium food until Jerry starts acting like a hands off owner. It's a crime the way Jerry is gouging the fans for food and parking at Cowboy Stadium! Only teams with strong head coaches, that hire their own coaching staff and draft the players they want, win Superbowl's. Boycotting the Cowboys really hurts because my family are true fans and love to buy Cowboy stuff, but we will sacrifice to get the Cowboys back on the winning track.

Wow, now that's a list of winning football has been's!

But it's Jerry and in his mind's eye, he has to give the fans the impression that he's in charge and got it under control.

Fire the coaches, afterall, it was THEIR fault and not the fault of the awful GM who keeps bringing in all this great talent????

Jerry needs a cranial-rectiotomy to remove his head from his you know where.

The Cowboys deserve Bill Callahan - he is the worst coach ever.
