The Cowboys have an opening at safety. Abe Elam, who started all 16 games at strong safety last season, remains unsigned. Dallas could use the 14th overall pick on Alabama's Mark Barron. He is a popular choice for the Cowboys on mock drafts around the country.
The Cowboys sent a contingent, including head coach Jason Garrett, to see Barron, cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick and outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw workout last week at Alabama. Garrett attended only one Pro Day last year -- USC's -- and the Cowboys selected Tyron Smith with the ninth overall pick.
Barron's teammates Upshaw and Kirkpatrick also will visit Valley Ranch, but Barron fills an immediate need.
Valley Ranch was a busy place on Wednesday morning as players passed through the hallways. The Cowboys are hosting 30 national prospects, and later this week, they will host locals during their annual Dallas Day.
