Alabama safety Mark Barron will visit Cowboys

The Cowboys have an opening at safety. Abe Elam, who started all 16 games at strong safety last season, remains unsigned. Dallas could use the 14th overall pick on Alabama's Mark Barron. He is a popular choice for the Cowboys on mock drafts around the country.

The Cowboys sent a contingent, including head coach Jason Garrett, to see Barron, cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick and outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw workout last week at Alabama. Garrett attended only one Pro Day last year -- USC's -- and the Cowboys selected Tyron Smith with the ninth overall pick.

Barron's teammates Upshaw and Kirkpatrick also will visit Valley Ranch, but Barron fills an immediate need.

Valley Ranch was a busy place on Wednesday morning as players passed through the hallways. The Cowboys are hosting 30 national prospects, and later this week, they will host locals during their annual Dallas Day.

I'm ok with Barron at 14 I cannot forget what happened to our secondary last season. It was totally humiliating and painful. We can get some pass rushers or even a Janoris in the second but we need to get what we can't get in any other round in the first round and thats Mark Barron

Ok fools who say we dont need a safety look at the steelers defenitly a better defense than ours right? Defenitly better corners than our right? No! they're corners suck to but they have a top notch safety that covers there butts. Barron is a great pick at 14 mainly because we can get D linemen corners n the second round..janoris jenkins or jarid crick...but if we dont sign barron or harrison smith we are s.o.l. At safety, i wouldnt mind Dre kirkpatrick over barron but only if he switchs from corner to saftey.

No, we do not need a safety. We have bigger concerns! No Baron and certainly no Courtney Upshaw. Upshaw was horrible at combines, and no one can tell where this kid could actually play consistantly.

I like Kirkpatrick or a D lineman.

Be great if we could get Hightower in the second round, move up some how.

I wonder how many frauds at Baylor and in the metroplex will become Foreskins fans because of Griffin?

Mark Barron, Please NO. Remember Roy Williams. Great tackler, coudn't cover anyone. We have one of these few years to get a DL. Poe, Brockers, or Fletcher. Kirkpatrick would be a huge upgrade over Barron as a saftey. I don't think I have anything to worry about, however.
