Linebacker Anthony Spencer figures he needs another week or so to get his hamstring healed, but he’s not pressuring himself to get into a preseason game.
“As long as I’m ready by the Giants game, I’m not really too worried about what’s going on right now,” he said at Cowboys training camp in Oxnard. “As long as I’m staying up with the playbook and staying in shape, that’s my biggest worry right now -- just being in shape for the season.”
Spencer has been out with a hamstring injury for two weeks. But he got into Thursday’s walk-through, and he thinks he can be ready to play in the third preseason game.
“It’s a process,” he said. “I don’t want to rush it. I’ve heard many stories of people coming back too early and messing it up. So I’m taking my time.”
Spencer said he doesn’t gain that much from playing in a preseason game.
“There’s not much changing but taking people to the ground,” he said. “It speeds up a little bit. But you really can’t get ready for the real season games until you’re playing in the real season games. It helps to have the games that we have, but at the same time, you’re really not getting the full effect of it until you’re in the season.”
