The Cowboys placed safety Barry Church (ruptured Achilles) on the injured reserve list Monday and are looking to add a safety to the roster. The situation is critical, said coach Jason Garrett, because rookie safety Matt Johnson _ a fourth-round pick in April _ remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, as well as a back ailment that surfaced during rehabilitation efforts.
Garrett said he hopes Johnson, who re-injured the hamstring Aug. 29 in the team’s final pre-season game, “can be a factor in this discussion in the next couple of weeks.” But for now, the Cowboys seek another body. From all indications, defensive back Mario Butler _ released Saturday _ is not expected to return. Butler played both cornerback and safety during training camp.
