“Corners. He’s got corners,” the Cowboys owner said Monday at Valley Ranch.
Jones said he is impressed by the adjustments Ryan has made from his first year to his second year, evidenced in last week’s victory against the New York Giants.
“I think he is to be commended and my hat’s off to him for making some of the adjustments that he made in the offseason relative to scheme. I’m impressed. I think from the standpoint of, to me, that’s one of the most important aspects of coaching is to be able to make those kinds of adjustments relative to, is it too much? How did we attempt to execute in his system? How he could adjust for better execution.
“All of those areas, he made adjustments.”
Head coach Jason Garrett said it’s more than simply adjustments.
“The more you’re in a scheme, the more you’re in a system, hopefully the better you’re going to get,” he said. “Guys get more familiar with what we want on a daily basis. We’ve added some players this year that we feel like fit our scheme so I think all those things contribute to our defense playing as well as they’ve played.”
Garrett said fundamentals are part of the improvement.
“I know we’ve made a huge emphasis on our football team to be better fundamentally, and that’s in all three phases of our team,” he said. “We just want to make sure we continue to do that. Sometimes the attention to that maybe shifts you away from maybe doing some other things that you might have done in the past. So really throughout our team – on offense, defense and in the kicking game – we’ve tried to make that emphasis. I don’t think it’s a philosophical change. I just think it’s a point of emphasis.”
