Just CHILL: Don’t be prisoner of the moment; Romo was good against Giants but he has been better

Clarence Hill

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was good, very good in the 24-17 victory against the Giants.

Some who have been overly critical of Romo in the past are calling it the best performance of his career.

But let’s not be a prisoner of the moment. Romo has been better at least five other times in his career from a statistical standpoint.

Let’s all remember that he probably should have had two interceptions, but Giants cornerback Corey Webster dropped a Larry Brown-like pick that came right to him.

But, hey, things like that happen.

It happened the other way in the fateful 34-27 loss to the Giants last Dec. 11. A darn near perfect game by Romo was spoiled because the Giants rallied for two touchdowns in the final three minutes.

Romo completed 21 of 31 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions for a 141.6 quarterback rating, the third best of his career. He bought time to make plays with his legs.  But all anybody remembers is the missed connection with a wide-open Miles Austin, who claims he lost it in the lights. It would have ended the game and likely put the Giants out of the playoffs.

Here are Romo’s best performances by the numbers:

11-23-06 TAMPA   22 of 29 for 306 yards…5 Tds…0 ints…148.9 QB RT…38-10 W

11-4-07 @PHI    20 of 25 for  324  yards…3 Tds…1 int…141.7 QB RT…38-17 W

10-25-09 ATL  21 of 29 for 311 yards…3 Tds…0 ints…141.6 QB RT…37-21 W

12-11-11 NYG   21 of 31 for 321 yards…4 Tds…0 ints…141.3 QB RT…27-34 L

9-13-09 @TAMPA 16 of 27 for 353 yards...3  Tds…0 ints…140.6 QB RT…34-21 W

12-17-11 @TAMPA 23 of 30 for 249 yards…3 Tds…0ints…133.9 QB RT…31-15 W

9-5-12  @NYG   22 of 29 for 307 yards…3…1 int…129.5 QB RT…24-17 W

It must be noted that Romo loves to carve up the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who will be the Cowboys opponent in the home opener Sept. 23. So be prepared for more fireworks and possibly another QB rating over 133.

But up first is a trip back to the Seattle for the first time since the dropped snap in the 2006 playoffs. It is a moment that has haunted Romo ever since. The Sept. 16 battle would be a great time to bury those demons forever with another stellar game.
