Cowboys aren't going to automatically plug Costa back in, Garrett says

The Cowboys aren’t going to automatically hand the starting center job back to Phil Costa, coach Jason Garrett said.

“We don’t have a rule that says, ‘This guy was a starter, then he got hurt, you can’t lose your job due to injury.’ We don’t have any of those rules,” Garrett said. “We’re going to make our best decision. We want to see him practice, see where he is, and see what the best decision is going forward.”

But the Cowboys may have to accelerate Costa's return to the lineup. Ryan Cook, who took over at center, did not practice Monday because of a hamstring injury he suffered in last Monday night's game against Chicago.

Costa was back at practice Monday, hopeful of shaking off the back injury that made him leave the season opener after three plays. The problem first flared up in training camp.

“He did a good job trying to come back from that injury late in training camp going into that Giants game,” Garrett said. “We’ve got to make sure he’s healthy first and foremost, and if he is, we’ll make our next best evaluation from there.”

Go tell that old fool with the alzheimer's riddled brain of a GM / Owner to go find a viable center for the rest of the year. Costa won't be able to play and Cook just isn't man enough to handle the position.
