Rob Ryan said the Cowboys were desperately calling for a timeout as the Panthers were lining up for a fourth down play in the fourth quarter – and they were going to get play stopped no matter what.
“I was going to run over there and grab the ball myself,” the Cowboys defensive coordinator said.
The Cowboys got their timeout in time, negating a conversion for the Panthers as they tried to drive with the Cowboys protecting a 16-14 lead and 2:11 left.
Ryan said linebacker Anthony Spencer and coach Jason Garrett were trying to call timeout.
“Assistant coach can’t call it. Jason is yelling timeout. They didn’t listen to him either,” Ryan said.
Ryan said the Cowboys were going with a timeout before the fourth down play no matter what. Carolina had a fourth-and-1 from its 40 after Steve Smith’s 10-yard catch on third-and-11.
“Damn, right. Yes,” Ryan said of the timeout plan. “That’s why it looked urgent. It was like, what the hell? They are not recognizing the timeout. But we got it down, so it was great.”
