Garrett: Cowboys should benefit from carryover of Carolina defensive success when facing RG3, Redskins

Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said carryover from the team’s success in defending the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 21 should prove beneficial in Thursday’s game against Washington. Both teams feature dual-threat quarterbacks who were the last two Heisman Trophy winners in college football (Carolina’s Cam Newton in 2010, Washington’s Robert Griffin III in 2011) and both incorporate zone-read runs for their mobile quarterbacks into their weekly game plans.

Dallas defeated Carolina, 19-14, when matched against Newton. Garrett believes there is value in carrying over the team’s game plan from that contest to Thursday’s matchup against the Redskins.

“There are a lot of similarities. When you defend this kind of an offense, I think the principles of defending them are the same,” Garrett said during today’s news conference. “So you can carry those things over. But the formations are different and how they get to the different concepts are different. So you have to be on top of that. And identification of that stuff is critical.”
