Saints quarterback Drew Brees has bad news for Cowboys fans who hope Sean Payton is their team's next head coach.
"I’m very confident Sean will be back here in New Orleans," Brees said Wednesday on a conference call with the Dallas media.
Payton's future has been speculated on since news broke that the NFL had voided a contract extension that Payton and the Saints had agreed to in 2011. He could become a free agent when the league reinstates him. The Cowboys' 3-5 start, combined with the fact that Payton is spending his suspension in DFW as well as his relationship with owner Jerry Jones has linked Payton to the Cowboys.
The Cowboys and the Saints play Sunday.
"I think everybody's making a much bigger deal out of this than it needs to be," Brees said. "I know it's a big topic and that kind of thing, but we have enough motivation why we want to win this game. Is it more motivation that I know coach Payton is less than 20 miles away, watching the game on TV as opposed as a couple of hundred miles away? No. I guess it doesn't really make a difference to us. He's always with us, even though we haven't been to talk with him or communicate with him. That's been tough. That's been difficult. It is what it is. We've just tried to manage."
