Former A&M standout Grady Allen, Hurst resident and father of Raiders' coach Dennis Allen, has died after suffering heart attack

Hurst resident Grady Allen, a member of Texas A&M’s Athletic Hall of Fame and father of Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen, died today after suffering a heart attack last week, school officials announced.

Allen, 66, was a defensive end at A&M from 1965-67 and earned All-Southwest Conference honors as a senior and team captain in 1967 while helping lead the Aggies to a conference championship. He played in the 1968 Cotton Bowl, when A&M upset Alabama, 20-16.

In his senior season, Allen received the Aggie Heart Award, given annually to a football player based on effort, desire, determination, competitiveness, leadership and courage.

Allen, inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame in 1995, went on to play five seasons in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons. Allen remained involved with the school after graduation and served as president of the A&M Lettermen’s Association in 2006.

Allen is survived by his wife, Kay, and three children: Geoff, Dennis and Ann Marie. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.

The Raiders announced Sunday that Dennis Allen, a former player at A&M and L.D. Bell High School, had taken a sabbatical from the team to be with his father, who was ill.
