Garrett says Cowboys swapped Frampton for McCray at safety to get McCray back in special teams mode

After weeks of going with Danny McCray at safety, the Cowboys got him off the field against the Saints.

McCray played one snap on Sunday, giving way to Eric Frampton as the Cowboys tried to match up with faster players. McCray, who stepped in as the starter after Barry Church went down with a torn Achilles tendon in Week 3 against Tampa Bay, has struggled in deep coverage and occasionally in tackling.

The Cowboys like his special-teams skills, however, so coach Jason Garrett said there is a benefit to keeping him fresh.

“Danny’s been playing so many snaps on defense, on special teams and battling through injury after injury all year long, we just felt like it was best for him, when we got these other guys back, to give them more of an opportunity on defense and all the different personnel packages and let Danny kind of play a little more special teams, spot play on defense a little bit and then kind of get himself back in the role he’s most accustomed to playing,” Garrett said. “So we feel like we had these other guys who we felt were capable of helping in that way and felt that was the best thing for us this week.”

McCray played 30 snaps on special teams and finished with no stats.
