Jason Garrett: “We have great belief in Tony Romo. We are excited about him being our quarterback.”

The support for maligned quarterback Tony Romo may be dwindling at an alarming rate among Cowboys fans after he tossed three interceptions in the 28-18 loss to the Redskins Sunday but he still has a big supporter in coach Jason Garrett.

Never mind that Romo tossed a career-high tying 19 interceptions this season and saw his record dwindle to 1-6 in win-or-go-home games to end the regular season or the playoffs.

Garrett said the Cowboys have great belief in Romo, who is entering the last year of his contract. The Cowboys would like to sign him to an extension before next season to lower his salary cap number, giving them more flexibility to sign other players to roster.

The question is what number can Romo and the Cowboys decide on _ not whether is going to be back.

That has already been determined.

“We have great belief of Tony Romo as our quarterback, Garrett said. “Tony has won a lot of big games for us, too to get us to the point where we can play for the division in week 17 in consecutive years. We all know that we want to take the next step and Tony is going to be a big part of that going forward. I think you have to understand the whole body of work. I think you have to understand that winning is how we get evaluated. He’s done a lot of great things for this franchise. We’re excited about him being our quarterback.”

What the Cowboys need to do is get Romo some help up front and in the backfield. He was sacked a career high 36 times for the second straight season. The Cowboys also set franchise records for fewest rushing attempts and fewest rushing yards in a season.
