Jerry Jones said he was happy for “good friend” Sean Payton upon his reinstatement by the NFL.
Jones, smiling big, said it also means good news for himself.
“It’s going to be wonderful to land in New Orleans and not have everybody that I think so much of – all those fans in New Orleans that are also at times Cowboys fans – I’m excited to not have them say to me, ‘Are you here to get our coach?’ ” he said to knowing laughs from reporters at the Senior Bowl. “That’s going to be a good trick when I touch down in New Orleans.”
Payton was speculated on as a candidate for a possible Cowboys head coaching vacancy last year when his contract extension with the Saints was voided. He was serving a year’s suspension by the NFL in the “Bountygate” scandal.
Jones said he was excited for all parties now that the suspension has been lifted in time for the Super Bowl.
“I’ve spent a lot of my life in and out of New Orleans. I love Louisiana,” Jones said. “Sean’s an outstanding coach. I’m proud for the Saints. Proud for him. He’s a good friend.”
