Jordan Woy, the agent for free agent linebacker Anthony Spencer, is traveling to Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday and plans to meet with the Cowboys before he leaves.
Woy said nothing has been set up as of yet but they two sides have touched base and plan to talk more extensively at the combine.
Spencer is a unrestricted free agent and considered one of the team's top offseason priorities. However, the Cowboys are roughly $20 million over the salary cap and currently have no room to sign him, let alone slap him with the franchise tag, guaranteeing him a $10.6 million salary for next season.
Spencer would love to stay in Dallas but also plans to take advantage of what was a career-best season in 2012 and maximize his options as a free agent if something can't be done with the Cowboys.
Woy said the Cowboys have to make some moves to get their cap situation under control. But as of now there is no rush.
"We are not a huge rush to get something done tomorrow," Woy said. "We will know a lot more after the combine."
