With the Cowboys scheduled to play in the Hall of Fame preseason game against the Miami Dolphins on Aug. 4, they will have an earlier start to training camp.
The team will report to Oxnard, Calif. for camp on July 19 in preparation. The first practice is scheduled for July 21.
Coach Jason Garrett welcomes the early start and extra week of practice because it helps the Cowboys make the transition from the 3-4 defense to the 4-3 under new coordinator Monte Kiffin.
It's also not lost on Garrett that the Cowboys were the last team to open training camp last season. More importantly, they opened camp three days after their season-opening opponent the New York Giants did, putting them at a disadvantage with less practices and less reps.
Garrett referenced all of that when he said that having the extra preseason game and opening camp early was "a good thing."
