It was the Jolly Rancher.
A cherry one.
Barry Church said he was chewing away happily on his prized candy a few weeks ago when his tooth chipped.
It was no big deal at first. “I felt it a little. On and off. But it was nothing crazy,” the Cowboys safety said.
Until Monday. When he woke up.
“The pain was crazy,” he said.
Next stop: the dentist. The procedure: a root canal. The result: a day away from practice.
“It’s good. I was numbed up yesterday because of the dentist appointment,” he said Tuesday after the morning walk-through. “They didn’t want me to practice, but I will be out there today.”
Given the choice, Church said he’ll take a day of camp over a root canal.
But the day away had everybody poking fun.
“I took the punches and kept going,” Church said, smiling.
Who had the best zinger?
What did he say?
Paraphrasing, Church said, “Stop eating nasty things.”
But it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. Church likes his candy.
“I have to stick to the soft stuff – Starburst, Skittles, stuff like that,” he said.
Not for a while. Not before the season’s over, anyway.
He returns to the dentist for more work Monday. He'll take training camp over the dentist any day.
