The Cowboys want to make sure they leave training camp with at least this question answered: Who is the backup middle linebacker?
“It’s one of the great Monte Kiffin questions,” coach Jason Garrett said. “Every day we talk about the backup Mike. Who is going to be our backup Mike?”
Kiffin’s defense asks for great cover range out of the middle linebacker. Undrafted rookie Brandon Magee shows that skill. Taylor Reed of SMU might work, too. There's also 2012 draft pick Caleb McSurdy.
Would Bruce Carter be a fit, if necessary?
“Bruce looks so good at that Will linebacker spot, I don’t know if that would be the first option right now,” Garrett said. “I think we are looking at some guys who are truly backup players, but also some guys who are playing the Sam linebacker spot. It’s an important question. One we have to get answered before we break camp.”
