Wes Phillips headed to rival Washington to coach the Redskins TEs

Tight ends coach Wes Phillips has accepted the same position with the Washington Redskins.

Phillips interveiwed in Washington on Thursday. His father, former Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips, broke the news on Twitter on Friday: Great hire by Redskins= Wes Phillips from proud Dad. Wes Phillips changed his Facebook profile picture to the Redskins' logo and lists his job as tight ends coach for the Redskins.

Wes Phillips' contract expired after the 2013 season, allowing him to leave without the Cowboys' approval. He likely got a longer deal in Washington with a new head coach, Jay Gruden, than with a Cowboys' coaching staff on the hot seat heading into the 2014 season.

Phillips arrived with his father in 2007 and Jason Garrett retained him after replacing Wade Phillips as head coach. Wes Phillips was elevated to tight ends coach before the 2013 season, replacing John Garrett. Phillips also served time as a quality control coach, helping with the receivers and special teams and was an assistant offensive line coach.

Wes Phillips becomes the fourth coach to leave Dallas. Assistant special teams coach Chris Boniol, nickel backs coach Mikal Smith and offensive assistant Dave Borganzi also have departed. Smith joined his father, Lovie Smith, in Tampa as the safeties coach.

Keith O’Quinn, a quality control coach who has worked with the receivers, also has an expiring contract. But he could be a candidate to replace Phillips as tight ends coach.

Mike Pope, the Giants former tight ends coach, and Brian Pariani, the Texans former tight ends coach, are among the tight end coaches looking for work.
