Before the Cowboys made a head coaching hire, Dat Nguyen was considered a strong candidate to re-join the team as an assistant.
The former Cowboys linebacker (1999-2005) was hired Tuesday to coach linebackers and be in charge of defensive quality control. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is a big fan of Nguyen, who definitely knows the personnel. The question is how well can he coach. He will also deal with the dynamic of coaching former teammates. Nguyen will work closely with Bradie James. They started alongside each other in 2005 in the 3-4 before a neck injury forced Nguyen to retire.
Talked with Nguyen in the hallway earlier today and congratulated him on the new job.
"I’ve got a lot of catching up to do,’" Nguyen said.
Houston Cougars coach Art Briles also believed Nguyen was a good coaching candidate. He interviewed with the Cougars and Briles was going to create an inside linebackers position for him.
