ALLEN _ The Allen Americans scored two minutes into Game 3 Wednesday, built a 4-0 lead and then held on for a 5-2 victory against Rapid City in the CHL Finals before 3,532 fans at Allen Event Center.
Colton Yellow Horn had a hat trick and added an assist, while Justin Bowers scored twice and Chris Whitley made 35 saves to lead the Americans to a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series to determine the winner of the Ray Miron Presidents' Cup. Game 4 is scheduled for Friday in Allen.
Bowers tallied the first two goals of the game (his ninth and 10th of the playoffs), and then Yellow Horn put a dagger through the Rush with a beautiful short-handed goal at the 1:33 mark of the second period. Horn took an outlet pass from Tyler Woodisse and then just stick-handled around Rapid City defenseman Brendon Hodge before flipping a puck past Rush goalie Danny Battochio for a 3-0 lead.
Yellow Horn then finished off a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play as he tapped in a pass from Jarret Lukin to make it 4-0 at the 10:10 mark of the second.
That chased Battochio from the game, bringing in Miguel Beaudry, who did not allow a goal. However, Whitley allowed just two goals, and Yellow Horn added an empty-net goal with 52 seconds left to close out the scoring.
