They are both long-term projects, but they do give the Stars some depth at the position.
Alex Theriau was taken in the fourth round with the extra pick acquired from Colorado at 109. Theriau is 6-2, 189 pounds and plays for the Everett Silvertips (WHL). He had 20 assists among 24 points in 70 games and was plus-12.
The Stars then took John Klingberg in the fifth round (131 overall) from Sweden. Klingberg is in the Frolunda program, and the Stars are very comfortable with players from there. He's thin at 6-0, 157 and is just getting started in his development. He had five assists in 27 games last season.
Stars director of European scouting Kari Takko: "He started to come on at the second half of last year. His attributes are a lot like Philip Larsen's. He needs to fill out a little, but he's a good two-way defenseman."
Stars European scout Rickard Oquist: "He's a two-way defenseman and he has some bite to his game. He's a good skater, mobile and moves the puck with ease. Big guy that needs some time to fill out."
Theriau shoots left. Klingber shoots right.
