Because we haven't started the regular newsletter for the season, we are dealing with questions here on the blog. Our latest in the rolling newsletter is a question regarding why the Stars seem to have lost the green in their uniforms:
Q: Mike, I think I know the answer to this before I even ask (and the answer probably has something to do with getting a new owner(s) in place), but I'll ask anyway. I was wondering if you had any insight into this topic. I'm a Dallas Stars fan from day 1 back in 1993, I have supported them through thick and thin and will continue doing so. However, someone has to do something about their uniforms, they are probably in the bottom 5 in the league. The jerseys look like long sleeve t-shirts. They need to bring back stripes at the bottom of the jerseys, the old logo, and get back to a green/yellow/white color scheme. Get away from the black. Think retro. Right now they are terribly boring.
I heard someone in Toronto started a petition to go back to their old style jerseys, and it worked. I'm not sure enough people in Dallas care anything about this to sign a petition. Do you have any idea how expensive it is for an NHL team to change jerseys? In a year when they have pretty much nothing else to sell, they could at least sell a new awesome and a very classic/traditional look on the ice. I bet they would sell a ton more jerseys if they redesigned. I saw the Sabers are back to their old jersey, and as much as I hate to say, they look great! Am I the only person you have heard from on this? Does anyone else care? Who should I petition?
Any insight is much appreciated,
HEIKA: Hey Spencer, I talked to a few people and what they tell me is that the earliest the Stars could get a new third jersey is next season.
They are fully aware of the desires of the masses, and they know that green is a big issue with the fans. They are studying possible options for next season, but no decisions have been made yet. As you suggest, new ownership will probably have a hand in how the team looks going forward.
Personally, I don't mind the look they have now. I think stripes at the bottom of the jersey look strange with the Reebok shirt-tail sweater, and I actually think the uniform is fine as it is, other than the lack of a real third jersey. As you know, this year, they will wear ``DALLAS'' both on the home and road and save the ``STARS'' logo for the third jersey.
I am open to new looks, and I also believe that bringing green back would be a great idea. To have a current third jersey that most people don't recognize as any different from the normal jersey hardly makes sense. It's supposed to be a bit of an ``event'' when you wear the third jersey. It's nothing right now.
As we have seen from the Liverpool fans, it's never a bad idea to let management know what you're thinking. If you want to start a petition or submit possible new sweaters that you have designed, I would simply get them to the Stars at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in Frisco. I would address it to ``Management: Re: Alternate Sweater.''
By the way, the team is going back to green on the helmet sticker this year once the regular season starts, so they are aware of the fans' desires and they do listen to the fans.
