As well as the goaltending has been performing for this team, they were due a clunker.
And that was a bad game in goal no matter how you slice it.
Now, the Stars also made some mistakes, and they paid for them, but Andrew Raycroft will tell you if he had even half the normal game he usually does this season, the Stars would have won.
So they write this off to experience and move forward. They have a day off Saturday in Vancouver, a hard day of practice on Sunday and a big game against the Canucks on Monday. And, as it has been all season, they will try to learn from mistakes.
"I give our guys credit, they battled back," Stars coach Marc Crawford said. "Andrew Raycroft, who has been sensational for us this year, had a tough night, so you throw that one out because there's not much more you can do than that. We know our goalie has been terrific all year and he probably feels worse than anybody else, and then on the other side of it, the other thing you hope you learn from it is that you just have to protect the puck as much as you can."
In addition to Raycroft being poor in allowing seven goals on 19 shots, the Stars also had some defensive breakdowns. They allowed a couple of 2-on-1s, and Trevor Daley had a bad turnover after the game was 5-4. That led to Jarome Iginla's goal.
But, just as important, the Stars missed on several solid scoring chances when they could have taken a lead in the game.
Despite scoring a goal, Brenden Morrow missed on a couple of other great opportunities.
"I think the one I did score, it was probably my worst opportunity, considering the other ones," Morrow said. "I hit a post and had some good chances in tight, but it was just not going in for me."
So the team sees an end to an eight-game road winning streak, sees their first regulation loss in January (a 7-1-1 run) and sees a game in which they allowed seven goals for only the second time this season.
"Overall, we kind of just got to get by it and look ahead to the big one on Monday," said Richards. "It was a good streak, we played a lot of good games, pulled a lot of stuff out, this just wasn't meant to be tonight."
