Five members of the 2008 Rangers filed for free agency Thursday. They are: first baseman Hank Blalock, All-Star designated hitter Milton Bradley, utility infielder Ramon Vazquez and pitcher Jason Jennings and Jamey Wright.
Blalock could return to the Rangers, who own a $6.2 million club option. General manager Jon Daniels said he expects the Rangers to exercise that option. Blalock could be used as trade bait, and teams could use him.
The other four are up for grabs, though each said he would like to return. Would Wright sign another minor-league contract? Would Jennings, coming off another operation, do the same? Will Bradley back off his wish for a multiyear deal? Will Vazquez do the same?
A healthy Bradley really made the offense go in 2008, and a fewer-innings Wright would be an effective arm in the bullpen. Jennings would be competing against a lot of other arms, and Vazquez might be too pricey when compared to German Duran.
