Finally, a big day

The winter meetings finally gained some momentum with word that the Yankees and C.C. Sabathia have agreed to a seven-year, $161 million contract. Not disrepect intended toward Gerald Laird, Ramon Hernandez, Casey Blake and Francisco Rodriguez, but this is the big deal that makes the winter meetings so exciting for baseball fans.

The Rangers are making some noise this week, with the Laird trade starting things off. Tuesday was bolstered by Nolan Ryan's good vibrations about Ben Sheets, and now Ryan has mentioned that the Rangers are pursuing five-time Cy Young winner Randy Johnson.

Beats last year, when the Rangers made a modest ripple by having Johan Santana on their big board but otherwise did nothing newsworthy. Well, except for the Chris Shelton trade.
