Winter meetings: Day 2, Update 4

Ron Washington just had his scheduled media time, which came after Jon Daniels' daily briefing. Three things to note from them:

1. Mark Connor, who was fired as pitching coach Aug. 2, is returning to the organization as a consultant. Daniels said Connor will provide advice on where to go with the minor-league pitching coordinator and also work with the minor-league affiliates.

2. The Rangers have interest in signing free-agent left-hander Eddie Guardado. Daniels spoke to Guardado over the weekend during Guardado's annual charity poker tournament. Guardado wants to pitch again, and he is open to returning to the Rangers. He was the Rangers' most reliable reliever until he was traded Aug. 25 to the Twins.

3. Nelson Cruz is the leading candidate on the current roster to be the Rangers' cleanup hitter in 2009. He's a right-handed power bat who could protect Josh Hamilton, but the Rangers could look to add a right-handed bat.
