Derek Holland to pitch for Rangers next week

Manager Ron Washington said that left-hander Derek Holland will make his 2010 debut next week against Oakland, either Wednesday or Thursday, as lefty Matt Harrison heads to the disabled list with biceps tendinitis.

The Rangers aren't going to make a roster move until they need to, though they have considered putting Harrison on the DL sooner if the need for another bullpen piece develops.

Holland has been sensational at Triple A Oklahoma City through six starts, going 4-1 with a 0.93 ERA in 38 2/3 innings. He has struck out 37 and walked only seven.

Harrison was injured Thursday night, when his arm stiffened as the Rangers scored six times in the third inning. He went five innings, and said this is an injury he could pitch through later in the year. Because it's early, though, the Rangers want to be cautious.

They also want to get Holland in the major leagues. He will come to Arlington on Sunday and throw a bullpen session so that pitching coach Mike Maddux can get his eyes on Holland. Washington did not say that Holland would be in the majors to stay.

"Lets let him get here, get out there and see what happens," Washington said.
