The Rangers' Canadian connection

It would seem to be a long shot that Rich Harden would ever throw a major-league pitch to Kellin Deglan, the Rangers' second first-round draft choice Monday, while wearing a Rangers' uniform. But both are from British Colubmia, and Deglan had the opportunity to meet Harden in March while playing in March at a tournament at the Rangers' spring home in Surprise, Ariz.

"He's a great guy," Deglan said. "I got to meet him in Arizona. He gave me his cell number and said to text him if I needed anything. I may have to text him and tell him Texas took me."

Like Harden, Deglan played hockey growing up and decided to pursue baseball instead against the advise of others.

"I played hockey until I was 10 years old. I was a defenseman," he said. "I had some hockey coaches telling me, 'Are you sure you want to play baseball?' But I'm glad I did. It's worked out for me so far."
