Rangers pregame notes

Cristian Guzman has tightness in his right quadriceps muscle and was scratched from tonight's lineup against Boston. Andres Blanco will start for a second straight night. Guzman is hitting .088 (3 for 34) but has started to break down his swing with hitting coach Clint Hurdle. There is no timetable for Guzman's return.

Ditto for Ian Kinsler, who hasn't done anything but lift weights since his DL stay was extended Tuesday. He hasn't run, hasn't swung a bat, hasn't taken any grounders. He has thrown, but that's it.

Josh Hamilton says he hasn't given any thought to the MVP race, which he has to be leading. "You know as well as I do that any day it can turn quickly," Hamilton said.

The Rangers and Red Sox have completed the Jarrod Saltalamacchia trade. The Rangers received catcher Michael Thomas as the player to be named later, but the Rangers plan to convert him into a right-handed pitcher. That process begins immediately in Arizona.

Mark Lowe (back) will leave for Arizona on Monday to begin a throwing program that he believes will get him in a big-league game before the end of the year. He's on the 60-day disabled list but is eligible to come off whenever he's ready. He's thinking mid- to late-September.
