The Rangers were going to wait until Wednesday to announce plans for their starting rotation after factoring in the Thursday off day, but assistant general manager Thad Levine just said that Rich Harden has agreed to go to the bullpen and Derek Holland will take over the No. 5 spot in the rotation and start Friday.
The rotation for the Minnesota series will be Holland, Colby Lewis and C.J. Wilson. Cliff Lee will open a four-game series at Toronto on Monday and be followed by Tommy Hunter. All five pitchers will be working on five days' rest, one more than normal.
Levine said that Harden actually was in favor of the move. According to Levine, Harden had been mulling a switch and feels like he will be able to contribute down the stretch. The Rangers haven't been satisfied with the No. 5 spot in the rotation, which Harden has occupied rather inconsistently over four starts since late July.
