Manager Ron Washington said the Rangers will consider pitching Cliff Lee on three days' rest in the American League Division Series, a move that would allow them to use a three-man rotation in the first playoff series since 1999.
Pitching coach Mike Maddux and bullpen coach Andy Hawkins were busy this morning piecing together the Rangers' rotation for the rest of the season and setting it up for the postseason. Lee will pitch Thursday and Wilson will pitch Friday so that they are on their normal rest for Games 1 and 2.
If Lee pitches on three days' rest for a possible Game 4, that would put Tommy Hunter in the bullpen. If the Rangers decide on a four-man rotation, he would be the fourth starter.
A meeting with the coaches and front-office staff has been set for Tuesday, when many of the roster decisions will be made. The Rangers have to choose between Mitch Moreland and Chris Davis at first base and sort out their bullpen. Frank Francisco is increasingly looking like he will be unavailable for the first round.
