The Rangers have officially declined the mutual option on Vladimir Guerrero, though general manager Jon Daniels said that both parties agreed before last season that neither side would agree to the option. The option was basically designed as a way to give Guerrero an extra $1 million without it affecting the 2010 payroll. Manager Ron Washington said he expects Guerrero to return. "Without a doubt," Washington said.
Washington could have a new contract as soon as Thursday. He and team president Nolan Ryan are scheduled to meet in the morning to discuss terms, possibly three years. Ryan said that he and Daniels have had brief conversations about an extension for the GM.
The Rangers are expecting a drawn-out process in the Cliff Lee Sweepstakes. Daniels and Ryan again stated the club's commitment to re-signing the left-hander. If Lee goes elsewhere, Daniels said that the Rangers would add a free-agent starter only if it was an upgrade over what is currently on the roster.
Neither Nelson Cruz nor Elvis Andrus will be playing over the winter, but first baseman Chris Davis will head to the Dominican Republic in two weeks. Davis will be there for just more than a month. Esteban German is also scheduled to play in the Dominican.
