Rangers make roster moves

The Rangers will purchase the contract of right-hander Brett Tomko and recall catcher Taylor Teagarden from Triple A Round Rock before today's game. Righty Mason Tobin, who left Tuesday's game with pain in his elbow, will head to the disabled list, and lefty Michael Kirkman will be optioned back to Round Rock.

Tomko was the last player cut from the Rangers' roster in spring training, just missing out on a bullpen spot. He had been starting for Round Rock, going 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA in two starts.

The return of Teagarden means that the Rangers will return to a seven-man bullpen and four-man bench, and it will give manager Ron Washington the freedom to use Mike Napoli more at designated hitter and move Michael Young around the infield more. Teagarden was hitting .389 (7 for 18) in six games.

The Rangers will have to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Tomko, something that can easily be accomplished by transferring Wilmer Font (Tommy John surgery) to the 60-day DL.
