Cardinals prospect has ties to fallen Rangers fan

PHOENIX -- Right-hander Shelby Miller, a Brownwood native rated as the St. Louis Cardinals' top prospect, said that his parents will attend the Monday funeral for Brownwood firefighter Shannon Stone, who died Thursday from injuries suffered while falling from the stands at Rangers Ballpark.

Miller's father, Mitch, worked with Stone for more than a decade, said Shelby Miller. The Millers had planned to watch their son at the Futures Game today but canceled their trip to attend Stone's funeral.

"I didn't know him nearly as well as my dad did," said Miller, who pitched last week against Frisco for Double A Springfield. "It's tough for him. They're pretty good friends. They've known him at least 15 years."

Stone was killed after falling from the front row of the left-field stands while trying to catch a ball thrown to him and his son from outfielder Josh Hamilton. Stone, 39, was conscious when he was taken from the ballpark but died en route to John Peter Smith hospital.

The Rangers have established a fund in honor of Stone through the Texas Rangers Foundation. For details, visit www.texasrangers.com.
