Major League Baseball, at the behest of Commissioner Bud Selig, invited Dirk Nowitzki to throw out a first pitch in the World Series after it was revealed earlier in the day that he had been bypassed. Nowitzki accepted and will throw out his pitch before Game 3 on Saturday.
MLB spokesman Pat Courtney passed through the press box and informed the Dallas-Fort Worth media of the decision, which first came to light in a report that MLB had nixed the Nowitzki nomination because it didn't want to entangle itself in the NBA labor strife. Baseball officials denied the report, saying that the three who were selected were just as good of candidates.
