Rangers officials, the agents for Yu Darvish and some 20 media members from Japan were camped out at Rangers Ballpark well into the night Tuesday as the 4 p.m. Wednesday deadline to sign the right-hander crawled closer.
General manager Jon Daniels led a group of club brass who met throughout the day and night with Arn Tellem and Don Nomura, who represent Darvish. Media from Japan assembled outside the center-field offices but were granted a reprieve when the Rangers welcomed them into the ground-floor lobby and supplied them with pizza and beer.
Team president Nolan Ryan was out of town on business Tuesday but was expected to return to the ballpark Wednesday.
Daniels declined to comment on the process, but a source said that the Rangers are cautiously optimistic that a deal will be completed. The club is confident that Darvish wants to make the jump from Japan to the majors in a Rangers uniform.
But, as has been expected the past few weeks, the negotiations will go down to the deadline.
