Rangers, Josh Hamilton start strong in All-Star balloting

A surge in attendance at Rangers Ballpark has fueled the Rangers in the first round of All-Star balloting. If the voting were to end today, the Rangers would have five position players in the starting lineup for the 83rd Midsummer Classic on July 10 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. Two others are second.

Josh Hamilton is the leading vote-getter in the game, with 2,587,991 votes. He is seeking his fifth straight All-Star start. Nelson Cruz would also be a starter, as he sits third among American League outfielders.

Ian Kinsler, Adrian Beltre and Mike Napoli are the leaders at second base, third base and catcher. Each leads by more than 100,00 votes. In Napoli's case, he leads second-place Matt Wieters by more than 500,000 votes.

Elvis Andrus and Michael Young are second at shortstop and designated hitter.

Rangers manager Ron Washington will be the AL team's skipper by virtue of the Rangers winning the AL pennant last season. Final voting and the full rosters will be announced July 1.
