Neftali Feliz to have Tommy John surgery, miss 12 months

The Rangers waiting until after the trade deadline passed to reveal news they had known for a few days: right-hander Neftali Feliz needs Tommy John elbow-ligament replacement surgery and will be out until next summer.

Feliz revealed last week that he had was feeling more elbow discomfort after his third rehab start after missing nearly two months with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament. An MRI exam was performed and revealed a torn UCL that ill be fixed this morning by Dr. Keith Meister.

The Rangers, who delayed the announcement so that it couldn't be used as leverage against them while working on a trade for a starting pitcher, expect that Feliz will miss about 12 months.

"Obviously, it's a blow for him and for the club," general manager Jon Daniels said. "It's a challenge for him. I think we all felt he was making strides as a starter. I think it is anybody going through rehab, the focus and the commitment and the self-motivation necessary to push through it. Fortunately, the nature of this injury is that guys do come back."

Feliz finishes 2012, his first year as a starting pitcher, at 3-1 with a 3.16 ERA in 42 2/3 innings.
