The Rangers, per their usual end-of-business-day news release, have announced that they have signed five players to minor-league contracts with invitations to spring training. They are: catcher Juan Apodaca, outifleder Jim Adduci, left-hander Neal Cotts, outfielder Aaron Cunningham and right-hander Yonata Ortega.
Cotts and Cunningham are the only two with major-league experience, and Cotts is the only one who isn't new to the organization after spending 2011 at Triple A Round Rock. Cunningham spent half of last season with Cleveland, where he hit only .175 before being designated for assignment and outrighted to Triple A in late July.
Fortunately, none of them has Adrian Beltre standing between them and a roster spot. Beltre, who was honored two weeks ago with his fourth career Gold Glove, has been named the American League's Platinum Glove for a second straight year.
The announcement was made Friday in New York.
